With your background, the obvious place is San Francisco, but it sure is expensive to live there.
Lots of lawyer's work in Boston and it has a bit of European flavor.
But given you love for food, I'd suggest New Orleans (actually that may really be the best bet for you and your wife, professionally). It is an interesting city, affordable compared to the other places. It has both high society and a 'HIGH' society.
A good days drive from Houston, but we would definitely have to visit.
